Tigers on the Hunt http://www.matrixgames.com/products/578 ... n.the.Hunt

This is a new game just released by Matrix that is a very close approximation to Advanced Squad Leader.
The game is easy to play and has an Editor allowing us to create scenarios I do not yet know since I have
only just installed the game if there are more things we can edit. But it looks to be something worth playing
and editing.

I think we might find it worthwhile to set up a Tigers on the Hunt area here.

There are some videos of the game being played located on Youtube for those of you who want to see what
the game plays like.

The graphics don't leave a lot to be desired when compared to SPWAW but then again this is not SP it's
Advanced Squad Leader for the most part. At any rate its going to be what holds me over until they
come up with a SPWAW replacement.

I've been following Tigers on the Hunt since Peter Fisla posted needing beta testers. I haven't bought it. I don't like the tile look, and still see SPWAW as more robust. We'll see how it's maintained, and what Mods develop.

I never played ASL. I do have a boxed Squad Leader on my shelf, but never played it either. I could never find someone to play with. I discovered Steel Panthers, and I could play against the AI, so that launched my gaming.

When Matrix announced Steel Tigers would use Battle Academy's engine, I bought it to investigate the engine. It too needs more to approach today's SPWAW. Hopefully, this engine gets built out. Example: Armor units don't model separate turrets nor skirts.

I'd be happy to watch a Tigers on the Hunt area here, but I don't expect to buy and play it.

You are not alone. A lot of people had problems finding someone to play ASL with.
I did buy Tigers on the Hunt and it is ASL with a good AI what is lacking is a pbm
mode. The graphics are not up even to SPWAW standards so the maps look lame
but they serve well enough to play the game.

There are mods that give you the ASL markers for the units and one that improves
the terrain graphics. They are building scenarios already so there seems to be a
bunch of people who lacked opponents for the board game finding this game as a
working way to play ASL with out having to finding someone to play with.

So yes it lacks the eye candy but the meat of the game is solid and plays like ASL

How are you enjoying the game?
I've checked it on the forum and the info in the "buy it" area.
There's some temptation for me, but dang... $50.

Is it worth it, Mike?
We couldn't play it together, could we?

Well it's ASL not SPWAW

So with that in mind it plays very much like ASL It's based more on a company or platoon level battle.
The maps are not even as nice as SPWAW maps but they suffice. Remember that ASL used the module
map system so you have a few maps that you can use to make larger maps.

I don't think we can play pbm unless there is a way to do it using something like Vassel which was
what the board game players use to play by email

Now the last part. Is it worth it...... I think so I bought it. But I also was one of those who always
wanted to play ASL but could never find someone would play it. Now at least I can play ASL against
the AI.

Few years back, Bobby Devo shared a bunch of VASSAL links & files with me. Thought I would try it but never did in the end.

Probably because I never had the ASL boardgame back in the day... knowing it was way too expensive to really get into in depth, I just blocked it out of my mind as something I would never own.

ASL against another human using VASSAL is still something I would like to get into "someday", probably after my last child moves out in a year or so. Then I will feel free to devote more time to something complex like ASL.

Maybe buying Tigers on the Hunt would be a good way to introduce myself to it. Dunno.

I looked into the possibility of saving the game and sending the save files back and forth but the way the game
handles the turns it won't work as a possible pbm workaround.

I didn't buy it. Anyway, thanks for checking that pbm idea out, NAT.
Now warm weather has come and the million outdoor tasks call...
